2019 Australasian Auctioneering Championships

22nd - 24th October, Melbourne

The Real Estate Institute of the Victoria (REIV) and the Real Estate Institute of Tasmania (REIT) are proud to host the 2019 Australasian Auctioneering Championships in Melbourne from
22 – 24 October.


2019 Champion

Justin Nickerson from Queensland was announced as the winner on 24th October 2019, his third win. 
Justin is the only Australian to win the Australasian Auctioneer of the Year three times. He is also a four-time winner of the REIQ Auctioneer of Year award, again being the only auctioneer in the state to achieve this distinction. 


The Judging Panel

Each participating REI is represented on the judging panel by a highly experienced auctioneer

Director of MJ Docking & Associates, Adam Docking has more than 20 years' experience in the real estate industry. MJ Docking & Associates was founded by his father in 1983 and operates in the residential, commercial and property management sectors. Adam joined the agency in 1994 and by 1998 was appointed Director and Officer in Effective Control. An Associate of the Real Estate Institute of Australia, Adam has been an REIV member since 1994. In 2017, Adam was elected to the REIV Board and is currently the Vice President. He is passionate about auctioneering and in addition to his role on the board, is the current chair of the REIV's Auction Chapter.


After 16 years in real estate, Sandra Masters, Director of LJ Hooker Kippax and REIACT Board Director, has worn many hats. However, auctions are her firm passion. As a licensed Auctioneer in both NSW and ACT, she has had the privilege of calling over 300 auctions. She was the winner of the Auctioneer People Choice award in 2017 and was on the judging panel at the Australasian Auctioneering Championships in 2017 and 2018. As a mentor to new Auctioneers coming into the industry, Sandra has been a sought-after advisor and teacher for upcoming auctioneers, and she enjoys the added challenge of competing.


Thomas McGlynn is a passionate and highly regarded real estate professional whose focus is to guide and motivate his sales team. In the pivotal roles of Director of Sales and Chief Auctioneer with The Agency, Thomas’s knowledge and unique skill set empower the agents to perform at their best in a supportive environment. Armed with close to 15 years of experience, Thomas has conducted over 4,000 auctions and run thousands of training and one-on-one coaching sessions. It is the rare combination of hands-on sales experience, general management and auctioneering that make Thomas a trusted and dependable leader at The Agency.


Mark Sumich is heavily involved in the New Zealand Auction sector. After commencing his auctioneering career in 1986, he has been involved in the competitive side of this craft since New Zealand commenced competitions in 1996. After being a regular entrant and occasional winner, he has subsequently moved into the organisational side of the competitions. Combined with a regular diet of actual calling and a passion for training budding callers, he is ideally placed to be a judge for this year’s event.


Andrew knows Darwin inside out. He grew up there and found his niche in real estate after operating businesses in construction, display & exhibition and signwriting. Before taking over Complete Real Estate in 2012, Andrew sold residential, commercial and development property for a prominent locally owned agency for 12 years, running a regional branch for 5 years. He is a skilled auctioneer and after coming runner-up in his first attempt at competitions, he has won the REINT Auctioneer of the Year three years running in 2014, 15 and 16.


Wally Boydell is a Fellow of the REIQ having been a selling Principal and Auctioneer since 1997. He has been a regular Judge of the Queensland Auctioneer of the Year competition for many years and a contestant in the competition beforehand. Wally has been a committee member of the REIQ Auctioneers Chapter and is still very involved in the industry as a Selling Agent and Auctioneer. Wally has previously been the Queensland Representative Judge for the Australasian Auctioneering Championships.


Brett commenced his career in 1979 and established a boutique agency operating in the eastern suburbs of Adelaide. He is a licensed agent and auctioneer and is currently the REISA President and REISA Board Director. In 1994, he established South Australia’s first fulltime freelance auctioneering company and has conducted more than 19,500 property auctions. He has coached and mentored both novice and experienced auctioneers for over 30 years both at a State and National level. Brett has served previously for 10 years on the Society of Auctioneers and Appraisers board as President Board Director and Trustee of the Golden Gavel Awards. 


Michael has been in real estate for over 30 years, selling property in the Greater Launceston area since 1978. First licensed as an auctioneer in 1979, Michael has played a key judging role on the REIT State Auction Championships for the past 10 years. Today, Michael continues to be is heavily involved in the REIT Auction competition and takes great pleasure as the organiser of the REIT Schools Championship. He looks forward to playing his part in continuing to enhance the real estate profile and in particular, the exceptionally high standard of auctioneering.


With over forty years' experience spanning the entire spectrum of property styles and prices, Peter has attained the respect and reputation reserved for a select few. Career highlights include Australasian Senior Auctioneer winner 1995 – 1997 and the 1995 REIV John Nichols Award for Auctioneering. In addition to countless award wins, Peter has featured in the top three sales/ listing position for Jellis Craig over the past five years. Peter is also part of an elite group of REIV Master Auctioneers.


David has been involved in the Real Estate industry for the past 30 years and throughout his career has sold over 1,500 properties. David has been an auctioneer for 25 years and is the current chairman of the REIWA Auction Committee, which he has served on for the last 10 years. David annually gives his time to Judge the REISA and REIWA Auctioneering competitions. Always keen to show his auction wares, David excels in providing these services not only for property auctions, but also for some of the biggest charities in Western Australia. David also helps with fundraising for local sporting groups that he sponsors.


Event Schedule

The 2019 Championship will commence with a welcome cocktail event where we will draw the order for the heats competition. Following two intensive stages of the competition, the winner will be announced at the REIV Awards for Excellence Gala Dinner on 24th October 2019.
